Manages quality systems, champions’ product development and is the technical resource for the Baltimore Mill. Implements and leads a strategic plan for quality, and testing, providing appropriate recommendations in process and chemical technology.
- Manage all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Caraustar accounting policies and financial control procedures. Ensures that reporting employees are trained and aware of the requirements of the Caraustar Standards of Business Conduct Policy.
- Champion a safe and healthy workplace, particularly in the area of HAZCOM
- Conducts training, audits and ensures safe chemical use
- Manage and maintain all chemical applications; leads chemical team
- Provide engineering and technical advice to the Production Superintendent
- Liaison with all chemical suppliers for the safe and efficient use of process and product chemistries
- Coordinate trials for new chemistries and new products
- Track supplier continuous improvement initiatives including cost control efforts
- Approves and tracks chemical spending and savings at all three mills
- Manage quality systems at mill:
- Ensure timely response to customer feedback and complaints
- Identify and align synergies for the site quality control systems
- Provide technical/quality input for OPEX and COMEX initiatives
- Champion product development at mill:
- Oversee product trial processes by coordinating between mill production and sales
- Monitor critical product trials from beginning to end: Scheduling, production and customer acceptance
- Participate in CAPEX planning to ensure mills are properly equipped for future needs
- Serve as liaison between sales, technical services and production department
- Paper machine and associated equipment improvement champion
- Participation in equipment improvement based on mill/industry needs
- Investigate solutions to mill and customer needs for equipment upgrades
- Identify improvement synergies that exist between all URB mills, drive change
- Participate in OPEX activities (e.g., engagements, Kaizens, etc.) to help facilitate improvements
- Act as a participant in Mill Group Continuous Improvement initiatives
- Manage all areas of quality issues and mill aspects of customer service, packaging, product development, documentation (e.g., communication log)
- Comply in all respects with the provisions of the Caraustar Standards of Business Conduct Policy required.
- Support mill environmental compliance:
- Supervise Mill Environmental Engineer
- Oversee preparation of all required reports and data submissions
- Manage Mill Boiler Department
- Supervise Boiler Operators
- Coordinate repair requirements with Mill Maintenance Department

- Provide leadership to continuous improvement projects:
- Reduce cost, waste and off spec product.
- Improve process stability and run ability
- Reduce down time
- Implement process changes as necessary
- Maintain process flow diagrams
- Champion Lean/OPEX efforts


- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and/or similar technical studies and at least 5-10 years of relative experience.
- Must have excellent written and verbal skills.
- Expertise in manufacturing best practices.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Must possess critical thinking abilities.
- Six-Sigma, Lean Manufacturing or other operational excellence system experience is a plus
